Kiwanis Club of Harrisburg: Brief History
- Chartered, February 16, 1918
- First President: FG Fahnestock Jr.
- Four officers, Nine directors, 112 members
The time was the beginning of the final year of WWI which ended that November. Membership included many pillars of the community, business and government. All categories were represented. Some notables included William C Alexander, representing manufacturing; J. Loy, Arnold, a Physician; Charles R Beckley of Beckley’s Business College; VH. Berghaus Jr. of the Harrisburg Evening News, and Thomas H Bogar, of the Bogar Lumber Company. Many more joined them to make a difference.
Our archives include the first handwritten record of board minutes covering January 31, 1918 and ending in December 18, 1919. Some of the minutes include preparation for Charter Night held on May 27, 1918 and included an honorary list for those absent but in service of the United States.
The end of the second year concluded with a meeting with club President Neefe presiding and
Rabbi Haas offering Grace. 85 members and 26 guests attended. A.W Hartman, the Music Director sang solo.
April 30, 2018: Kiwanis Club of Harrisburg may be 100, but its mission remains youthful.
Although the Kiwanis Club of Harrisburg celebrates its 100th birthday this year, members don’t really think of it as being old.
Partially, that’s because the community service club is so youth-oriented.
“Our mission is to help children and families of the world and local communities,” said club President Jessica Mercy. “Our focus has always been helping children, although the ways we do it may have changed because of society’s changes over the past 100 years.”
